Important tips for fishing rods maintenance

Here are some basic tips that will help you maintain your fishing rods properly and give it a longer and durable life.

  • The first important thing, never store your fishing rod with the fishing lure or hook. This is because; the guides can take beating from hooks and may also have cracks, chips and breaks as well.
  • Another crucial point about maintaining your fishing rod is that, you must rinse the fishing rod after use. Although, it might be little strenuous after a long day of fishing, but still it is important for maintenance of the rod. Salt water fishing leaves a lot of salt residue on the rod, which can be harmful. Again, if you go for fishing in freshwaters, then also you can have residue in the form of algae on the rod that will definitely cause harm to it. So, it is better to rinse the rod with clean and fresh water to remove the residue and dirt. You can also use a soft brush to clean any deposit. But never forget to wipe the rod with a dry cloth before storing.
  • Perhaps, the most common mistake that anglers do is to stop caring for the fishing rod after the end of the season. There is no specific time when you are going to take an off from your fishing session and that can be for a long period of time. But before you do so, remember to slack the reel seat as this will release the pressure which will further help you from avoiding any other problems with right fitting of the reel foot and reel seat.
  • You must check the cork handles properly because most of the time, anglers treat the blanks and guides with care but not the most important piece, the rod. You can use a plastic sponge and mild dishwashing soap to keep the cork handle clean and good looking. This will actually help you prevent corrosion by water, dirt and other elements as well.
  • Your fishing rod cannot handle hot temperatures and so, you must always avoid going in automobiles or boats that are exposed to the sun for prolonged time. Besides, you must also remember not to store the fishing rod in the sunlight for a long period of time; it can result in corrosion and breaking down of vital parts of the rod. Also, avoid keeping the fishing rod on the outside wall exposed to the elements of nature.
  • Another very common way that leads to damage when you stuff fishing rods by putting them in vehicles or boats. Again, if you bundle up your rod and transport, it will result in rubbing of the blanks leading to cuts and breaks. But, you can avoid this problem if you carry the fishing rod in protective sleeve or by carrying it separately.
  • Release any tension that the fishing line may develop as this would help in the development of a permanent bow in the rod.
  • Among all, the most important point to remember is proper storage of your fishing rod. If you don’t store it properly, then your rod might get exposed to situations causing break or damage to the equipment. You must always keep the rods in an upright position.

Now, that you know the ways to maintain your fishing rods, it will surely help your fishing gear stay longer and better

Beyonce/ Mary J. Blige Duet Was Meant For 4

'She sent it through her A&R people to give to me,' MJB says of My Life II's 'Love a Woman.'

Not sure how to keep your woman happy? Just ask Mary J. Blige and Beyoncé. The two divas lay out a tutorial on how to court the fairer sex with "Love a Woman," from MJB's upcoming My Life II ... The Journey Continues, Act I. But fans may be surprised to learn that the long-overdue collaboration was nearly a one-woman affair.

B initially recorded the song for her4 LP, but thought it would be a better fit as a duet with Mary.

"It was a song she recorded for her album that didn't fit her album and she sent it through her A&R people to give to me," Mary revealed to MTV News. "When the song came, her voice was on it completely and it was just amazing and I wasn't sure that they wanted to give me this record because it was so amazing."

The soothing track starts off with Mary sweetly singing, "So you think you know how to love a woman/ But I think it's still some things you need to know." As the flowery instrumental builds with a serene piano melody and accentuating horns, MJB goes on to warn that a woman needs more than material things. B turns up the heat demanding that she needs "more than sex," she needs to be made love to. From there, the song plays as a lyrical how-to. Communication is a must, as is respect, but coming home late and being a one-minute man is a no-no.

While both the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul and an expecting Queen B display good chemistry on the song, a video for the track may be hard to pull off. "I'm sure 'Love a Woman' would be a single but I can't really trouble Beyoncé right now; she's pregnant and I'm sure she's doing her stuff," Mary said. "So whenever she's ready, if she's ever ready, I'm ready and it'll be great."

Should MJB and B shoot a video for "Love a Woman"? Tell us in the comments!

Dimmu Borgir Release Live DVD; Plus Led Zeppelin, Brujeria, & More News That Rules, In Metal File

'It shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums,' guitarist says.
By Chris Harris

On October 14, Dimmu Borgir — who just happen to be Demi Lovato's favorite black-metal band — will release a a three-disc DVD/CD set called "The Invaluable Darkness," the band's first visual offering since 2002's "World Misanthropy." Boasting live footage shot last year, during gigs in Norway, Germany and England, "The Invaluable Darkness" demonstrates the unbridled furor of seeing Dimmu live, guitarist Silenoz said.

"It shows the honest rawness and atmospheric darkness of our concerts," the Norwegian told Metal File last week, after dismissing recent online rumors that his band's next LP would be coming out through Roadrunner Records. "Basically, it shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums. It's just a different side to the band, basically."

Dimmu Borgir began thinking about "The Invaluable Darkness" two years ago, but didn't start capturing footage until last summer, Silenoz explained, adding that the band will use its current stint on the Blackest of the Black Tour — which got underway Thursday night in Miami Beach, Florida, and also features the tour's founder, Danzig, along with Moonspell, Winds of Plague and Skeletonwitch — to promote the DVD. Dimmu Borgir will not, however, use the tour to write material for their next LP.

"It's our first time on Blackest, but Glenn [Danzig] had wanted to bring us out before [on the tour], but we weren't available until now," Silenoz said. "We've done Ozzfest before, but we're looking forward to this tour more. We did the main stage on Ozzfest, playing in f--_ing broad daylight. This tour will let us play in bigger places, but at the same time showcase more of what the band's about, visually. We are going to concentrate on the tour for now. Some years ago, we tried putting [material] together on the road, but once we got home, we listened back to it, and were like, 'What the f--- is this?' So, we just scrapped it all. We find it's so much better to totally focus on one thing at a time, and then, when that's over, you move on to the next [thing]. We don't really feel like we need to rush things, anyway, so we'll just take our time, and it's going to be what it's going to be."

Dimmu Borgir hope to reconvene in late December to begin writing the follow-up to 2007's diabolically titled In Sorte Diaboli. "We have some ideas floating around already, but we haven't arranged any material yet," he said. "We'll start doing that once the touring for this DVD is over." The band's frontman, Shagrath, is also due to marry soon — he's engaged to actor Nicolas Cage's ex-girlfriend, Christina Fulton, so that may have an effect on when Dimmu finish their next album, which Silenoz said could be out this coming spring.

"I'm sure [Shagrath] won't let anything get in the way [of] the band — I think, I hope," the guitarist said. "We don't need a Yoko [Ono] situation."

While Dimmu have been at it going on 15 years now, Silenoz said he doesn't think their forthcoming material will be much of a departure from their previous black-metal offerings.

"And we have always been about more than just that term, 'black metal,' " he said. "Luckily for us, the older you get, the less concerned you get with the categorization and putting labels on your music. Things start getting more and more limitless with us, and we know that we operate within certain frames. But we try not to analyze things too much, because it's just going to be working against you in the end. When we write new stuff, we don't think about what we should write — we just get together, and put material together, and if we like it, we keep it. That's the formula, if we even have a formula."

Dimmu Borgir are definitely getting older — guitarist Galder will be missing Blackest because of a recent addition to his family, and Susperia's Cyrus will be filling in for him; while former Vader drummer Dariusz Brzozowski takes over for Hellhammer, who had to leave the band in 2007 after sustaining a neck injury that's now limited the use of his right arm. As Dimmu has gotten on in years, Silenoz admits they have failed to keep pace with some of the more extreme black-metal acts that have followed in their wake.

"We helped open doors for the more extreme bands out there," Silenoz said. "I'm sure we helped open doors for bands like Watain, [insomuch as] people that had maybe started listening to us first then went on to the more extreme stuff. Let's face it — we're not as extreme as Watain and other bands like that, but we're fine with that."

The Blackest of the Black Tour continues through November 10 in San Francisco.

The rest of the week's metal news:

Dimmu's tourmates on Blackest, Winds of Plague, have announced ex-Azusa drummer Art Cruz has joined their ranks — he replaced Jeff Tenney. According to the band's blog, "Art has already added a new spark to the band and has provided us with a solid backbone that will allow us to continue our rampage stronger than ever." ...

What the world really needs is another Led Zeppelin box set, so, on November 4, Rhino Records will issue the Led Zeppelin Definitive Collection Mini LP Replica CD box set. For just $200, you'll get 1969's Led Zeppelin, 1969's Led Zeppelin II, 1970's Led Zeppelin III, 1971's Led Zeppelin IV, 1973's Houses of the Holy, 1975's Physical Graffiti, 1976's Presence, 1976's The Song Remains the Same, 1979's In Through the Out Door and 1982's Coda, as mini-LP replicas, with artwork from the original U.K. LP sleeves. Now, you know what you can get your dad for Christmas. ...

Former Killswitch Engage frontman Jesse Leach and current Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz have teamed up for a new project they're calling Times of Grace, and they've already started working on material for their debut album. According to Leach, "We have two songs to go and we will be finished with all of the vocals. Adam has taken lead vocals in three songs as of yet and he is doing a great job. We also worked on a track yesterday that is so epic — we trade vocals and do two different melodies at the same time. This album went from a melodic metal album to an epic mix of metal/rock/pop/shoegaze and punk. So all of your metal expectations will be incorrect — we are pushing genre boundaries." To quote "Meet the Parents," we'll look forward to that, Greg. ...

The Funeral Pyre and Early Graves will be hitting the road together next month, starting November 7 in South Lake Tahoe, California. Dates are booked through November 21 in Hollywood. ...

The latest incarnation of Brujeria, which features Carcass frontman Jeff Walker and Napalm Death's Shane Embury, have lined up several U.S. dates for this winter. The band will begin its brief trek November 28 in Denver, and wrap things up in Dallas on December 7. ... Demiricous will be touring with the Gates of Slumber starting November 9 in Denver, for a jaunt that's scheduled to run through December 6 in Indianapolis. ...

Nearly three years after Roadrunner Records' Roadrunner United concert, which took over the Nokia Theater in New York's Times Square, the label is now releasing footage from that special night as "Roadrunner United: The Concert." The DVD, which hits stores December 9, will boast two discs and 24 live tracks, including Life of Agony's "River Runs Red," King Diamond's "Abigail," Killswitch's "My Last Serenade," Type O Negative's "Black No. 1" and Sepultura's "Refuse/Resist." ...

According to Blabbermouth, Verrot, bassist for Swedish black-metal outfit Elimi, committed suicide on October 3. In a statement, the band said, "Verrot was a very good friend, brother, an excellent bass player/musician and an important part of Elimi; we respect his decision and hope he'll find his way with the dark gods of Chaos. Let your black flame be a part of what brings forth the day of wrath."

Flickr adds to sharing options, now easier to share photos across the Web

flickr
It sure is nice to see some new developer action over at Flickr. The relatively slow-moving photo-sharing service has just announced a new sharing update, which consists of several new and easy ways to embed or link to your photos:
  • Share from Photo page: There's a new sharing option on each and every photo page. When logged off, the button shows only Facebook and Twitter options. But once you log on, you get Tumblr and Blogger too, and can configure other sharing venues as well.
  • Share non-public content on Facebook: This doesn't sound like a great idea, but you now can share private photos on Facebook if you're so inclined (and if you trust your privacy settings).
That's the gist of the update; it makes it easier to show off your pretty pictures in a plethora of places.

Older phones running custom Android firmware from Moto, HTC, and Samsung have major security issues, say N.C. State researchers

Android security issues

Researchers at N.C. State University have performed a study of eight Android phones (HTC's Legend, EVO 4G, and Wildfire S; Motorola's Droid and Droid X; Samsung's Epic 4G; and the Nexus One and Nexus S from Google) and found more potentially disturbing information.  While the Nexus phones and OG Droid (phones that run stock Android) had one minor security issue, namely a code bug in the pico app that would allow another app to delete the pico installer app, the rest of the bunch didn't fare so well.  All the phones with customized versions of Android had serious security issues

In particular, by exploiting these leaked capabilities, an untrusted app on these affected phones can manage to wipe out the user data on the phones, send out SMS messages (e.g., to premium numbers), record user conversation, or obtain user geo-locations – all without asking for any permission.

Apparently because the system applications built by vendors such as HTC, Moto, and Samsung are all signed with the same digital signing key, they are able to inter-communicate and access each other's data.  While this is a serious security flaw, it's also possible that it was done by design so that applications like Friendstream or Social Hub can easily parse social networking app data and aggregate it, and these researchers just found a new method to exploit that system.

While the implications for Android are new, the idea of exploit attacks on popular computing platforms is not.  As Android grows in popularity, more people will be focused on finding (and reporting) exploits against the OS.  Researchers have dutifully reported the issue to Google and all the OEM's, although they express difficulty dealing with HTC and Samsung who (as of this writing) the researchers say have been "very slow in responding, if not ignoring our reports/inquires".

Should you be worried?  Not any more than you were yesterday.  Malware exists because a whole hell of a lot of people use Android, and users are not restricted to installing only approved applications.  If these types of reports bother you -- and that's a pretty valid response -- you still have the option of installing only trusted applications by well-known developers, or other options to not run the affected firmware on your phone.  And while nobody wants to hear me say it again (but I'm about to anyway), Nexus devices running Android as it was written are once again immune from these serious issues, so are always the better choice if you value your security.

Brooke Mueller Arrested For Cocaine Possession & Assault!

Looks like Brooke Mueller hasn?t kicked that drug habit after all. Charlie Sheen?s ex was arrested last night for assault and possession of cocaine, yikes. RadarOnline is reporting that Mueller was busted for cocaine on Friday night in Aspen, Colorado. The celebrity site is further claiming that the train wreck was also booked on an assault charge. An Aspen PD spokesperson has confirmed Brooke was taken into custody and that she was released on an $11,000 bond. Details about what went down are unclear at this moment but word on the street is that the Aspen Police Department will be issuing a statement about that shortly. If this sounds familiar well it is. Two years ago at Christmas time in Aspen, Colorado was the infamous Brooke Mueller and Charlie Sheen blowout that involved drugs and him allegedly attacking her with a knife. Since that incident Brooke?s life has seemed to be nothing but a disaster. She has done a number of unsuccessful stints in rehab, including one earlier this year that did nothing for her. Along with her drug problem she and Sheen were in a custody battle for their two sons, Max and Bob for awhile but as of [...]

Justin Bieber Brings Christmas Spirit To 2011 AMAs

Pop star croons 'Mistletoe' during light-filled set Sunday.

Holiday cheer filled the 2011 American Music Awards on Sunday night (November 20) when Justin Bieber took to the stage to perform his festive hit "Mistletoe," from his chart-topping Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe.

Presented by friend and collaborator Sean Kingston, the Biebster began the song atop a high platform as smoke spread below his feet. In an all-white ensemble, the singer strolled from each side of the platform, igniting a string of neon lights. As he crooned his way through the Messenger-produced song, Bieber walked onto lower platforms before making his way onto the main stage.

And it wasn't just JB who lit up with arena, but also the audience. Cameras panned to shots of attendees waving glow sticks.

Bieber took to Twitter over the weekend to hype up his AMA performance, writing, "AMA blocking rehearsal. @dankanter is here. sounds like fun." Kanter, his musical director, echoed similar sentiments about the star's set. "AMA rehearsal. JB is killing it! Just wait until you all see him tomorrow night!!!" he tweeted.

JB has many more stuffers left in his stocking, including appearances on NBC's Christmas tree lighting November 30 and TNT's annual "Christmas in Washington" TV special December 11.

What did you think of Bieber's AMA performance? Share your reviews below!

Apple's attempt to block sales of popular Samsung devices in the US is denied by the courts [updated]

Legal

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh has denied Apple's request for a preliminary injunction against Samsung late Friday afternoon, one that would have halted sales of three Galaxy phones and the Galaxy Tab 10.1.  Judge Koh found that any action halting the sales of these devices in the United States would not be necessary to keep Apple from being irreparably harmed, and denied the sales ban.  This doesn't mean things are over between Samsung and Apple, who currently are involved in more than 20 legal battles in 10 different countries, as the case is still to be heard.  This ruling was concerning the halting of sales only.

Of course both sides involved had little of value to say -- this is a legal drama and tight lips are a wise choice.  Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet referred to previous statements about the case, saying that Samsung's "blatant copying is wrong" and Samsung spokesman Jason Kim said "This ruling confirms our long-held view that Apple's arguments lack merit".  Whether the arguments truly lack merit is something the courts will have to decide later, but for now the products in question will remain on the shelves for the Holiday buying season.

Update:  Reuters has updated their original story with more information from judge Koh's ruling, stating that "Apple has established a likelihood of success on the merits at trial" regarding some of the smartphone patents, and that "Apple would likely prove Samsung infringed one of its tablet patents. However, Apple had not shown that it was likely to overcome Samsung's challenges to the patent's validity."  General consensus is that the suit will end with monetary damages more likely than any injunction.  Whatever the outcome, it would be nice to see all these legal issues slow down at least a little.
